Brecon Members and Gremlin Rally Pick up Top Awards

The HRCR Clubman’s Championship consisted of eight rounds in 2025 specifically for historic road rally cars and 2025 saw Martin Leonard and Chris Phillips pick up best in class in their age-related cars. Martin in his 1984 VW Jetta and Chris in his 1967 Volvo Amazon being presented by Championship Secretary Ken Binstead.

In addition to taking class honours BMC picked up the Best Event honours with the Gremlin Rally with Martin and Chris being joined by joint Clerk-of-the-Course Jason Murphy at the Leamington Spa venue hosted by former British Champion co-driver, Howard Davies.

The Best Event Award was extremely pleasing with the Gremlin being quite a fledging rally in the HRCR calendar and up against events that are many years its senior and with a geographical spread from Yorkshire to Wiltshire to East Anglia and Cheshire.

Joint Clerk, Martin Leonard commenting that the “award is a result of overall club teamwork in the pre-event planning and on the day activities which plays its part in galvanising the club”.

The last evening in January saw the WAMC Awards Evening at the Metropole Hotel, Llandrindod Wells. And in the company of former World and British Champions Brecon Motor Club members were again amongst the recipients. Flying the flag in the Fairfield Motor Co. Sprint and Hill Climb Championship club member Lyndon Evans showed that Brecon MC isn’t just a rally club as he collected his class award from no other than WAMC President and former WRC Co-driver Phil Mills. Relatively new rally driver Colin Evans found himself on stage to collect awards for both the JD Tyres Tarmac Championship and MCK Vans King of Epynt from Phil Mills and Major Andy Butcher respectfully bringing an end to a very successful 2025 season. Also bringing down the curtain on their 2025 season were the regular crewing of Dai “Block” Jones and Glyn Jones collecting class awards in the Pirelli Forest Championship. Dai and Glyn have been tearing up the forest stages in their recognisable yellow BMW for more years than can be easily remembered and have now decided to hang up their overalls and give others the opportunity to fill up the trophy cabinet. Brecon MC offer heartfelt congratulations to all award winners with special mention to Dai and Glyn after entertaining us for so long.

Saturday 24 th January, 2026 Expanding on last years successful show at the Market Hall this year the club concentrated on local cars that have starred on events over the Epynt Ranges. Once again local rally competitors Craig Jones of CMJ Motors and Josh Jones of J & P Engineering supported the show not only as headline sponsors but by bringing along their own rally cars. Craig's Mitsubishi Evo was owned and driven by the late Tony McWhirter whose family were happy to sell it on to Craig and see it out again with Tony’s son Jez looking after its on event servicing. Josh however, used the expertise of his own workshop to self-prepare his Peugeot 2lt, 16 valve 205 which even though has completed several rallies is still far from the finished article.
