Monday June 13th
Another year of hillclimbs over and as the dust settles a regroup is planned to attract more entries next year. A financial loss is anticipated but it was a great event to run and even better to compete on. A number of new competitors were present and hopefully they will spread the word. Weather wise it was disappointing in the morning on both days but dry and warm for all the timed runs to count.
Whilst no records were broken it was a consistent performance by Martin Watts from Abergavenny that put him at the top of the time sheets on both days, his Sylva Riot performing faultlessly. There were great performances on both days and event sponsors Brian and Tim Dennis both shone, Brian taking a class win on Sunday while Tim ran as fastest man in the wet practice sessions on Saturday. Unfortunately differential failure curtailed his Sunday fun.
Phil Jones had a good weekend despite clouting a bale on Saturday in his Subaru and won his class. On Sunday a spin in son Craig's BMW Compact rally car was enjoyed but probably not by Craig..............Anyway it must be added that Craig drove it faster than Dad Phil thus settling an argument over who was going to be the quickest!
Lisa Chappelle was out for the two days and despite a lurid moment on one run still managed to set a personal best time in the little Mini. Mark Hatton made his debut in the newly built Clio and set some very respectable times despite not having had any seat time. Two competitors, Jake Harbour and Liam Griffiths were hillclimb virgins but did really well to improve their times throughout Sunday in their Toyota MR2 and Peugeot 205 GTi respectively.

Doh! I didn't want to do that Gromit............
What a weekend! Heavy rain forecast for Saturday never really materialsed thank goodness and although it was wet it wasn't too bad at all. A thin entry on Day 1 didn't detract from a great days sport and everyone enjoyed themselves. Shaun Elwell took FTD in his Lotus 7 while Simon Rogers who was expected to do well sat it out with no wet weather tyres available. The marshals were hero's, we couldn't run without these people and their time is much appreciated.
Sunday dawned dry and bright and a much larger entry enjoyed ideal conditions. FTD went to Simon Rogers but he didn't manage to break his hill record but managed to equal it exactly! Thanks again to all the hill, paddock and start marshals, a sterling job done by all. The club had a couple of competitors out, James & Lisa Chappelle both had a go in their Mini on Sunday and James won the class. Lisa had taken the award on Saturday so hopefully there won't be any arguments in that household with an award each!
Events sponsors Brian & Tim Dennis were fully competitive and both won their classes on Saturday despite Brian failing to finish his second run with fuel pump failure. Tim won again on Sunday and Sam Davies aired Brian's Citroen C2 and narrowly missed out on a class win against much more powerful opposition. Part of the event sponsorship is provision of a breakdown truck and thanks must go to Viv Joy and his grandson for their time and enthusiasm.
Time to think about the classic tour now and then the big event, the Flatters before we get ready for classic show on August 2nd. Phew!
It's the Dennis Motorsport Epynt Hillclimbs this weekend, June 13th & 14th. We would really appreciate any help from members or non members. Contact Bob Long if you can or just turn up!
